How to Locate a Grave at the John Howard Cemetery
The John Howard Cemetery includes Civil War veterans as well as veterans from World Wars I and II, the Spanish American War, a lone veteran of the War of 1812, and the grave of a Negro Scout from the Seminole War. While the reasoning for the burial locations is not known, we can only suppose that the soldiers were buried in the next available space upon time of death.
There are many graves not yet catalogued. For those that we have thus far, we used the following key to designate burial locations. The first stone in the first row of each section is designated as a aid in showing the pattern.
Section R1
Rows are counted top to bottom and stones are counted right to left in
this section.
Section R2
Rows are counted top to bottom and stones are counted right to left in
this section.
Section L1
Rows are counted top to bottom and stones are counted right to left in
this section.
Section L2
Rows are counted top to bottom and stones are counted right to left in
this section.
Section L3
Rows are counted top to bottom and stones are counted right to left in
this section.
